The Regional Institute of English (RIE), Chandigarh was established in 1963 under a Government of India act to address the educational needs in English of the governments of Jammu & Kashmir, Haryana, Himachal Pradesh, Punjab and Chandigarh. Functioning within the purview of the Chandigarh Administration, the institute collaborates with English and Foreign Languages University (EFL-U), Hyderabad under a Government of India scheme and with CBSE, NCTE, NCERT, Regional English Language Office (US Dept of States), New Delhi and British Council, New Delhi in its research projects and teacher training programmes.
Since its inception, the institute has been attending to teacher education requirements from primary to postgraduate level. However, on witnessing the increasing importance of English as a global language in sectors such as education, business, politics, travel/tourism, information and communication technology, etc, the institute has introduced courses for students including MA English in affiliation with Panjab University, Chandigarh.
Almost all nations stress on education as it is the single most potent instrument of improvement and empowerment. The institute believes in imparting higher education in link with human values and employment opportunities. Our endeavour is to promote the desire of learning in our learners while honing their critical thinking skills. I am sure education of this nature will go far in achieving development of society and planet earth.
